How does what we say reflect how we understand each other and ourselves?
I’m an empathy researcher and data scientist who has spent seven years studying this question. My work brings together a wide array of tools from natural language processing to Bayesian statistics to experimental and survey design. In everything I do, I’m guided by three principles:
1) Measurement validity. Are we measuring what we think we’re measuring?
2) Generalizable findings. Does our research tell us about the wider world or do they only tell us about the specific people we surveyed?
3) Accessible scientific communication. Can non-scientists understand what we found, how we found it, and why it matters?
